What is a Domain Name:
A domain name is a way to identify and locate
any given website on the Internet. No two active websites can have the same domain name. A domain name always contains two or more components separated by periods, called "dots". Register your domain to distinguish yourself and promote your
business online.
Here are a few reasons of why you will want to
get your own personalized domain name:
- You would like a domain to portray your personality.
- You want to keep up with current online market trends.
- Because your competition has their own.
- You want your customers to get a feel of your Business.
- You want to give better service to your customers.
- Your company has registered trademark or brand names.
- You want to offer better customer service and provide complete information of the company.
Some of the common top level domain names and
meanings:
- .COM is for commercial, for-profit people and organizations.
- .EDU is for 4-year, degree granting colleges/universities. (schools, libraries, and museums should register under country domains)
- .GOV is for United States federal government agencies. (state and local governments register should register under country domains)
- .NET is for network infrastructure machines and organizations.
- .ORG is for miscellaneous, usually non-profit, organizations. ( for use by organizations and individuals that do not clearly fit in any of the above )
How to Choose the Best Domain Name:
The first consideration is what will your
customer use to find you. (For example, www.yourcompanyname.com). Your
business name itself would become your e-identity. This would also prevent cyber squatters
(and your competitors) from blocking your domains and misleading the
public or taking your business. This obvious choice may not be available
because someone else might have already registered it. If this
is the case then you will need to be creative and choose a different name
that reflects the core values and ethics of your business. It might also reflect the
needs of your target customer.
The best name will be one that your
customer can remember easily. If possible, stay away from using
hyphens or other characters that your target visitors might miss.
A new trend in naming is using long, tongue twisters,
with up to better than 60 characters. Long domain names are typically
easier to find unused. (Again, as long as your customer can remember it
and spell it correctly). We recommend trying to get as short and
simple of name as possible that reflects you.
